Film Production During a pandemic

Unexpected events are the name of the game when it comes to making a film...but what do you do when it's a global pandemic? If this past year has taught us anything, it’s how to be resilient. Hear from 1st Team PA Kevin Smith for The Walking Dead: The World Beyond, International Cinematographers Guild Digital Loader and 2nd Assistant Camera Rachel Mangum, Assistant Costume Designer on Ozark and Key Costumer for WandaVision Marcella Caudill, and Storyfischer Social Media Producer Dylan Briese as they discuss how they’ve been able to adapt and persevere during Covid.

Dylan Briese

Social Media Producer, Storyfischer

Dylan Briese is a multimedia artist working in the film and marketing industries since 2018. He currently works at Storyfischer, a German Social Media Marketing company based in Dagebüll, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Along with his full time job, Dylan also works as a freelance video editor, photographer, graphic designer, musician, animator and production assistant. He lived in Los Angeles for a year and a half before moving away due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. During his time in Los Angeles he worked for companies including The Walt Disney Company, Nitro Circus, King Studios and Prime Zero Productions. He worked on projects with celebrities including Chris Brown, David Blaine, Lil Dicky, Zach King, Jason Derulo, Ty Simpkins, Akiva Schaffer (The Lonely Island), and Travis Pastrana.

Dylan produces his own experimental music videos under the pseudonym Park & Ride Video (@parkandridevideo on Instagram). These videos rely heavily on old school 80's and psychedelic visual/audio aesthetics, and get their unique look by being processed through a real VCR. He currently edits the videos, produces the music, and animates the assets on his own, although got music production assistance from his friends in the industry in the past

Rachel Mangum

Digital Loader/2nd Assistant Camera, International Cinematographers Guild

Rachel graduated from the UNCW Film Studies Department in December of 2010.  It was during her time at UNCW that she learned she wanted to be in the camera department and began to take as many classes as she could on the subject (Thanks, Glenn Pack!). 

In 2012, she started working as a video production assistant on the feature film, The Conjuring in Wilmington, NC. Since then, she has been working in the industry ever since. 

In 2015, she moved to Los Angeles and began working as a digital loader/ additional 2nd AC on t.v. shows such as, Dice, The Good Place, Veep, and Mr. Mayor.  Her current show is Season 4 of A. P. Bio.

Marcella Caudill

Assistant Costume Designer, Ozark

Key Costumer, WandaVision

Marcella Caudill, a UNCW graduate, double majored in Film Studies and Theatre: Design and Technology. Her Film Studies experience and work as a seamstress in the UNCW Theatre Department Costume Shop helped her land my first job as a background costumer weeks after graduation.

She is currently working as the Assistant Costume Designer on Ozark Season 4. Aside from her film and television work, Marcella has also served as a wardrobe stylist for commercials, reality tv shows, photo shoots, and even Mardi Gras floats. She has dressed and styled thousands of people of all shapes and sizes for hundreds of different types of characters. 

Her passion lies in making visual art in a positive, collaborative environment with a team of filmmakers.

Kevin Smith

1st Team PA, The Walking Dead: The World Beyond

Kevin Smith graduated from UNCW’s Film Dept in 2016 and shortly began working in the industry thereafter. He has worked in various departments ranging from extras casting and the production office to on set in costumes and the AD department.
